In Nigeria, 4-6 million people live with sickle cell disease (SCD), that is, 1 in every 4 Nigerians carrying the trait. Annually, 100,000-150,000 Nigerian newborns live with this disease; this is, 33% of the global population with SCD, according to Nwabuko, O.C., Onwuchekwa, U. and Iheji,O. (Pan African Medical Journal, 2022)
This disease specifically poses an extra challenge in developing nations due to conditions and lack of essential resources which in turn affects mortality rate. This is why Elusahsia's Trade Center is partnering up with Voice of Warriors to aid SCD individuals live better lives, have opportunities and breakdown the stigma especially for women.
